Fruit Buyer’s Report | Fruitful Office February 2015
Dear All,
As the seasons change so do our fruit varieties. The change is considerable and although the fruit varieties on offer are more limited, both the quality of certain "core varieties" improve and we sometimes include certain exciting surprises.
- Winter varieties still running strong.
- The British apple season is still running strong and expect to find good quality British apples (we are currently focusing on the Royal Gala variety) until around March
- For an attractive and tasty apple variety, why not try the Pink Lady - an attractive and sweet "pink-coloured" apple variety currently available
- Clems are always popular in winter due to their abundance in vitamin C. Easy peelers are available at the moment and you should focus on the Nardacotts variety. Although initially they will come from Morocco and/or Turkey, soon Spanish ones will be available. They are extremely sweet at this time of the year
- Kiwifruit. Another "winter" variety. Before becoming commercialised by New Zealand exporters as the kiwifruit in the 1960s, the fruit was known as the Chinese gooseberry. Nowadays it is grown in several countries and Italy is the largest producer. Kiwifruit contain about as much potassium as bananas, 1.5 times your DRI of vitamin C, and also contain vitamin E (particularly good for the skin).
Stay healthy everyone.
