Fruit Buyer’s Report | Fruitful Office October 2014
Dear All,
As the seasons change so do our fruit varieties. The change is considerable and although the fruit varieties on offer are more limited, both the quality of certain "core varieties" improve and we sometimes include certain exciting surprises.
- Apples. The British apple season has started and we love these apples because they are crunchy, juicy and normally extremely sweet. By sourcing apples from the UK, we are also minimising food-miles and supporting local farmers. The varieties to look out for are Braeburn, Cox and Royal Gala. We also sometimes include the Egremont Russet. Most British apples come from Kent, "The Garden of England".
- Pears. Another "winter" variety. Pears provide a very good source of fibre and are rich in vitamin B2, C, E, copper and potassium. They help to regulate sugar levels in the blood stream, and aid in the functioning of the digestive system. There are numerous varieties. We particularly love Conference pears because they are extremely sweet when ripe. Also look out for Forelle, Packhams, Red Bartlett and Williams.
- Other varieties. The Ya Pear, otherwise known as the Asian or Chinese Pear, has been cultivated in Northern China for over 2,000 years. There, it is one of the country's most popular fruits. They are white or light yellow in appearance. The Ya Pear contains about 87% water and various kinds of vitamins. The Chinese use it for clearing away heat and moisturizing dryness in the lungs. Perfect for those dry air-conditioned office environments!
Stay healthy everyone.
