Fruit Buyer’s Report | Fruitful Office Summer 2021
Dear All,
Summer is here! Variety at the fruit markets is in full swing and sweetness levels an annual highs.
Here are some varieties to look out for in our ‘seasonal mix’ office fruit baskets and office fruit boxes:
- Flat peaches. Also known as the doughnut peach or Saturn peach, flat peaches look like they have been squished – hence the name. Flat peaches were first grown in China in the 19th century, and have not been genetically modified as some people might think. Flat peaches are hugely flavourful, juicy and sweet, with a hint of almond. Like normal peaches and nectarines, flat peaches are rich in vitamin A which is known to offer protection from lung and oral cancers. They also contain many vital minerals such as potassium, which helps to regulate heart rate and blood pressure.
- British strawberries. They remind us of summer, they are sweet and fresh, they are British, and we love them! This year, the season was delayed with unseasonable weather delaying ripening. But this also means bigger and juicier fruit as a result. Strawberries are loaded with antioxidants, and eating them is associated with a reduced risk of many chronic diseases: they may improve heart health, lower blood sugar levels and help prevent cancer.
- Fresh figs. These will emerge in the late summer/early autumn. Figs have a long history, being among the oldest fruits consumed by humans. They sweetened all types of dessert before sugar was widely available and used. Figs originated in Asia and spread with the Greeks and Romans throughout the Mediterranean. Fresh figs are rich in nutrients but relatively low in calories. They may improve digestion and decrease constipation – and for this reason have long been used as a home remedy for digestive problems.
Enjoy the good weather, Wimbledon, and stay healthy everyone.
