2012 was the year we got serious about sourcing British produce whenever possible. The UK has great berries (in the Summer) and apples and pears (in the Winter). By sourcing UK produce we help to minimise food miles whilst supporting local farmers.
In September 2012 we went to Kent (known as 'The Garden of England') to meet proud farmer Simon Bray. He specialises in apples and focuses on the Braeburn and Royal Gala variety. We were impressed both by this beautiful English countryside and the professionalism employed by Simon and his team. A lot of work goes into maintaining the orchard and the apples are handled like royalty from the moment of picking right through to supplying to the end customer. The apples looked and tasted amazing: crunchy, juicy and extremely sweet - just like we love them!
The apple season in the UK runs from September/October to February/March. When we met Simon he was already harvesting some early season apple varieties which were ready for picking. It was an enjoyable day spent learning about apples and their farming methods.
