Planting Fruit Trees campaign update: January to March 2015
Focus: Deforestation is still a huge problem
- The Malawians, like many other Africans, have an urgent need to set fire to almost all forests in the belief that it will improve agriculture in the following year
- Farmers indiscriminately cut down trees and set fire to them where they have fallen
- The problem is that only the top soil is fertile - and this is inevitably quickly washed away from the steep slopes once the trees have been cut down and cleared
- Although not the entire solution, growing new fruit trees helps to educate communities about trees and their economic value
