Planting Fruit Trees campaign update: July to September 2024

As the trees grow they start to bear fruit

Growing a variety of fruit trees with different growth rates means that the fruit tree club members enjoy a harvest of Papaya and Guava within six to 12 months, and then Citrus and Avocadoes in a couple of years. The fruit harvested can then either be consumed or sold at local markets.

A year ago we introduced a hybrid variety of Papaya tree, which is shorter and still produces quality fruit. Modester is 10 and lives with her grandmother, Flora, a member of Chiomba Fruit Tree Club. She is one of many children excited that their parents and grandparents are growing this hybrid variety. She said, “I am glad my grandmother is growing fruits as I can pick a pawpaw and have breakfast before school.”
